Planning Strategically for Credit Union Success
One of the greatest benefits your credit union can offer its members is a strategic plan for the future. The League’s Cooperative Solutions Group (CSG) proudly serves as a partner in helping credit unions create opportunities based on organizational strengths and build comprehensive plans of action to achieve financial stability.
Planning Models
CSG offers three planning models: Tactical Planning, Scan-Driven Planning and Vision Planning.
Tactical Planning
Tactical planning is designed to generate consensus around annual goals and budgets. It allows for examination of the credit union’s internal environment and then determines how it can be improved. Once identified, tactical goals are implemented for completion in a short period of time, typically one year.
Scan-Driven Planning
Scan-driven planning is designed to provide a credit union with goals and action steps developed in reaction to a thorough examination of key internal and external environmental issues. With a consultative approach in mind, extensive information is provided which focuses on current financial operations, competitive issues, leadership and economic conditions and their impact on the credit union in years ahead. The final goals, action steps and budgetary considerations provide the credit union with a plan of action that manages and improves weaknesses and builds on the organization’s strengths.
Vision Planning
Vision planning is designed to analyze the credit union’s current financial condition, internal environment and competitive and economic conditions, all from the members’ perspective. Also, trends are examined that may impact the credit union’s development of its vision in the future. In essence, vision planning examines what it will take in the future to maintain a vibrant role in the lives of members. Vision planning requires a great deal of pre-planning effort and is long-term in nature. Implementation typically takes up to five years.
Facilitation Models
CSG offers two types of facilitation options within the two planning models: On-Site Facilitation and Pre-Planning/On-Site Facilitation.
On-Site Facilitation
Selecting on-site facilitation limits CSG staff involvement in the actual facilitation of your planning session. However, your facilitator will provide structured guidance and direction for your credit union’s board and management team as you move through the planning process.
Pre-Planning/On-Site Facilitation
With pre-planning/on-site facilitation, your credit union’s leadership works with the facilitator to help identify and determine the desired outcome of the planning process. During the first phase, a CSG representative will be responsible for preparation of all pre-planning materials including:
- Pre-planning surveys
- Key financial analysis materials
- Materials to promote thoughts/ideas and provoke discussion during on-site facilitation
- Custom planning session manual
- Audio/visual materials
Phase two of the process involves the on-site facilitation by a CSG representative. The representative will provide the necessary guidance for the board and management to complete a successful planning session. The process will incorporate the critical pre-planning information as a catalyst to making the planning process a valuable experience with result oriented outcomes. The final planning document will provide you with a comprehensive success plan that will include credit union related goals and objectives and related financial information.
